| The quiet and novel Galerie Hans Brumann opens its door on May 30, 2008 to the public with frenetic scenes of the mundane rubble of the Philippine public or wet markets painted on the colorful canvasses of NUNELUCIO ALVARADO, and the bucolic figures of fishermen and fish vendors and rice farmers positing their harvests as melded by FERDINAND CACNIO in the joint show entitled "Staples for Perpetuity."
As timely as the current global food crisis and the daily grind of the local news stories, the works on exhibition pose questions on the state of anarchy among the downtrodden sector of the local populace who are crammed in their makeshifts, or those who amble above the water towing their fish catch from bancas up to the foot worn wooden ramps. Do their heedless struggles to provide for the human consumption redound only to meager earnings that leave them only as frenzied sights of human squalor and as basins of Filipino communal life?

| You don't have to travel too far within our gorgeous country to find a good place to get lost in. The CUBAO EXPO is experiencing a resurgence, a renaissance, if you will, what with its heady mix of old and new, kitschy and cool, relaxing and thrilling, laid-back, organic, and downright lovely little places where time just stops, and you can stare all you want, and no one will stare back at you with a look of consternation. Here in CUBAO EXPO you will find restaurants worth their salt - each little (or big, depending on how you see it) eatery is worthy of visiting and revisiting over and over again. Bellini's has been around for the past 8 years plus plus, and it's known as being the best Italian restaurant that's been every faithful customer's pleasure to keep a secret to themselves. Alan's Grill is fast becoming known for the excellence of its Filipino dishes (you HAVE to try the Beef & Chicken Pochero - unforgettably lovely!). Mogwai, is a restaurant on the open-air ground floor, wide-screen cinema & a bean-bagged "no shoes on the carpet please" indie-film lover's haven on the 2nd floor. Halo Cafe serves scrumptious ORGANIC foods, and at night the cocktail gourmands flock there for their now-getting-too-famous Helo-Helo (a dizzyingly delicious version of the Weng-weng!) Oohwables' Shop is the cutest, quirkiest boutique featuring local fashions by Tricia Data .Then, of course, there is Ho-Land Hopia, where by 5pm the scrumptious Chicken Pie is sold out, because it's just too delicious to keep stocked too long! For the art lover, Cubao X is pleasure incarnate, what with the galleries of Breathing Space, White Box, Black Soup, and LOMOMANILA's Kollektib sprinkled like so much culture-candy in the heaven that is Cubao X. For the discerning shopper, Cubao Expo is waaaay better than ANY mall in the country - The READING ROOM (you have to go there to find out why it's called that...), Grand Thrift Shop, Vintage Pop, Heritage art&antiques gallery, Valentino's, Janylin's, and 2 well-stocked ukay-ukay (yep, vintage clothing, momma!!!) - these shops are enough to let the afternoon fly straight into the evening if shopping is your goal! If you're worried about getting cash-strapped, 2 banks are right outside the Cubao Expo entrance waiting to dole out more moolah from their always-online ATMs. Come over to Cubao Expo - it's one of the few places you'll rate as WORTH COMING BACK TO OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- here's a link to the map of CUBAO EXPO: http://bagsonmymind3.multiply.com/photos/photo/21/1 |
| Once upon a time she lost a button. Once upon a time she lost her
temper. But if there was one thing the Collector wouldn't let herself
lose, it was a fight—especially one wrought by old envy. For if there
was something she couldn't collect, it was what the Fairest of Them
All possessed: a name in the superlative, no less than in the name of
beauty. But what the Fairest didn't have was the Collector's flawless
sense of fashion, exceptional in subtle pomp even the haute-couture
circles of Paris, Milan, and Cainta secretly admired. (All the
Fairest's mediocre attempts at chic attire had failed.)
No surpise then that when one of the two fat cyclops discovered that
their lady's button had been stolen by the Fairest, the Collector was
glad: Finally, she had a reason to rip the ghastly face off the head
of that "pretentious albino slut, clitless fashion-whore-wannabe" (her
words from an interview by Tondo Style Quarterly.) "She gives albinos
a bad name," she continued, paraphrasing Bon Jovi.

| Art informal launches its 2008 Calendar of Exhibitions with two simultaneous Solo Shows: SANTING by Riel Hilario and RIGODON by Irma Lacorte.
SANTING is tagalog for the blinding glare of the sun. For many cultures, the sun and its light is the eternal metaphor for enlightenment and the divine. Riel Hilario presents as diaristic visual journals - images that attempt to capture the experience of mystery, the joy and pain of serendipitious encounters, of learning from spontaneity, of finding connection with the world behind the scenes, and of reconciliation with a source of enchantment, of inspiration and bliss.
Irma Lacorte's RIGODON - from the dance of two concentric circles moving in opposite directions (resulting in new partnerships as the circle rotates) is a collection of black and white images or pictographs as variable elements to a visual narrative, inviting the viewers to participate in a virtual "dance" creating multiple possibilities of compositions and meanings.
Both exhibitions will open on the 17th at 6pm. Visit Artinformal at 277 Connecticut St. Greenhills East, Mandaluyong City. Tel 7258518 |
